Eight young students from Guru Gopalan’s School of Drums graduated to level three of their journey into learning to play the tabla at a glittering function held at the Veda Dharma Sabha Hall, on Saturday.

The young musicians were also addressed by Logie Naidoo as well as their tabla teacher, Deshan ‘Styler’ Naidoo.

The school was established at Natest Primary School in Phoenix in 2013. It offers musical classes with traditional instruments to those interested in learning regardless of age, race or religion.

Deshan has taken to teaching the classes and mentoring the students.

The eight students, who graduated, on Saturday, have been receiving guidance from the musician through the first two levels of study as well as the formal examination to reach level three. The exam included both a practical and written portion.

Naidoo said, “Tutoring these students to their advancement to level three has been a deeply rewarding experience. Two things that have always been very close to my heart are music and respect for our culture. I am happy to help these children realise the importance of both these things. It is always a pleasure to see them each Saturday and watch their progress. We used to meet in person each Saturday until the global pandemic no longer made it possible, classes are now held via video conference, allowing me to observe their progress and provide instruction and guidance despite the dangers of COVID-19.”
